Kaziranga Wildlife Conservation

Kaziranga national park is very good example of wildlife conservation done by human society. The basic factor of presence of wild animals in a national park and wildlife reserve depends only on the availability of wild animals in abundance to run the food chain and eco-system of the wildlife reserve. Rare animals like One Horn Rhino, Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Elephant, Hoolock Gibbon, Wild Buffalo etc need protection and conservation all over India. Luckily, all these animals are provided with best possible conservation and protection facilities here at the Kaziranga National Park. This National Park has a good conservation history, especially due to its efficient management policies being applied and brought into force by the Govt from time to time. Kaziranga started in 1908 as a reserve forest to protect rhinoceros and other wild animals. In 1954, the government of Assam passed the Assam (Rhinoceros) Bill, which imposed heavy penalties for rhinoceros poaching in 1968; the state government passed the Assam National Park Act of 1968, declaring Kaziranga a designated national park. The 430 km2 (166 sq miles) of area in the park was given official status by the central government on 11 February 1974. In 1985, Kaziranga was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique natural environment. Thereafter shooting was prohibited and exploitation of forest products was stopped. Various laws, which range in dates from the Assam Forest Regulation of 1891 and the Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2002, have been enacted for protection of wildlife in the park. Preventive measures such as construction of anti-poaching camps and maintenance of existing ones, patrolling, intelligence gathering, and control over the use of firearms around the park have reduced the number of casualties. Since 2013, the park used cameras on drones which are monitored by security guards to protect the rhinos from armed poachers. Several corridors have been set up for the safe passage of animals across National Highway-37 which passes around the southern boundary of the park and is also a gateway to enter the national park. Also to prevent the spread of diseases among animals and to maintain the genetic distinctness of the wild species, systematic steps such as immunization of livestock in surrounding villages and fencing of sensitive areas of the park, which are susceptible to encroachment by local cattle, are undertaken periodically by the National Park staff and Assam state forest department. Similar conversational activities are undertaken for Elephants, Tigers, Hoolock Gibbons; Wild Buffaloes also like special grazing zones are made available for Elephants to prevent them from Grazing into farms of local villagers thereby avoiding the Elephant Human conflict. Special Buffer zones are created for tigers where a large livestock of deers, antlers, foxes, jackals etc animals are available on which Tigers may feed and survive. Also whenever Tigers happen to cross the boundaries of buffer zones, to avoid the tiger human conflict, the park and forest department authorities carry out Elephant mounted hawking operations to chase away the tigers back to the deep forest ranges away from the resident villagerís areas. All such steps for preserving and conservation process in the Kaziranga National Park, the wild animals livestock have resulted in being enriched just within past few years and is a wonderful must visit tourist destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
